Rhythmic Devices

  • variations can be subtle, and are often easier to play than to notate
  • rubato is effective at slower tempos, or for introductions / first verses
  • even in steady tempo, rhythms may be interpreted freely in performance
  • for best results, work this out at the keyboard
  • use rhythmic displacement to add interest and syncopation
  • balance between patterns and variations (expected and unexpected)
  • accompaniment can reinforce rhythms of melody, or play against them
  • you may decide to add or omit notes at this stage
  • articulation is also an important element
