Using ii-V Progressions

  • ii-V is fundamental to jazz, as we will see throughout this course
  • ii has scale degree 4 like IV does, and lacks 7, so it is subdominant like IV
  • ii7 even has IV embedded within it
  • like IV, ii tends to move to V, and it does so more strongly because of the circle of fifths
  • for any V chord preceded by IV, consider replacing IV with ii
  • for any V chord not preceded by ii, consider replacing the V with ii-V
