Inner Voices

  • create interest via motion in inner voices
  • especially effective in places where melody is sustaining or resting
  • most commonly used at medium or slower tempos
  • aim for consistent motion (e.g., at least one voice moving on every beat)
  • motions can be diatonic or chromatic
  • try to resolve the motion by step in the next chord
  • major seventh chords: move 5-6-7 or vice versa, with or without #5
  • minor chords (especially other than in ii-V): any motions between 5-6-7-1
  • dominant seventh chords: move 4-3, 9-b9, and/or 13-b13
  • the 4-3 motion comes from classical suspension
  • V9sus-V7b9 is essentially ii7-V7b9 with a V pedal
