- bass is an important role in jazz, whether played by bass or piano LH
- motion in upper voices works well with or without bassist
- in absence of a bassist, we can create additional bass motion as well
- we will still focus on playing roots in the bass when the chord changes
- consistent pattern versus organic integration with accompaniment
- bass may be disassociated from tenor and/or rest of chord
- alternate bass / tenor
- alternate outer / inner
- play root in lower octaves2w
- approach tones
- arpeggiate with fifth (1-5-7 or 1-5-10)
- faux stride (1, 5-7 or 5-10)
