Rhythmic Devices
- variations can be subtle, and are often easier to play than to notate
- rubato is effective at slower tempos, or for introductions / first verses
- even in steady tempo, rhythms may be interpreted freely in performance
- for best results, work this out at the keyboard
- use rhythmic displacement to add interest and syncopation
- balance between patterns and variations (expected and unexpected)
- accompaniment can reinforce rhythms of melody, or play against them
- you may decide to add or omit notes at this stage
- articulation is also an important element
